The present invention relates to a means and method for ensuring the integrity of the locking devices on most homes, apartments, storage sheds having more than one entrance, and the like where presently employed locking means are susceptible of being overcome from the exterior by the use of unauthorized duplicate keys, master keys, stolen keys or other felonious devices, and, in the instance of deadlock bolt devices, the use of unauthorized equipment to withdraw the securing bolts. Inserting said locking arm pivotal end between said spaced apart upstanding supports and positioning said pivotal end for pivoting on said bolt and wing nut set positioned in one of a selected first or second hole formed in said upstanding supports. A key head and lock handle restraining device consisting of:Ī base supporting member having two, spaced apart, upstanding supports and a bottom surface, said supports having a first hole formed in said upstanding supports in an elevated position and a second hole formed in said upstanding supports in an alternate elevated position, said bottom surface being coated with a self-sticking adhesive,Ī locking arm having a pivotal end and an extended end, said extended end having a first side and a second side bent downwardly to form a channel having a width determined by the width of the lock handle and adapted to receive a lock handle, and said extended end having a longitudinal slot formed therein between and parallel to said first and second sides, said slot being adapted to receive a key head, If you can tell us what brand of lock it is, we may be able to talk you through that.1. The solution in that case is to reassemble these parts correctly aligned, which is a bit of a pain to describe in text and which varies a bit from lock to lock. The parts need to be installed in such a way that this freedom is at the right point in the locking/unlocking cycle if you get that wrong, that can produce exactly the symptoms you're seeing where the key or thumbturn stops before it can retract the bolt. There is a limited range of free motion designed into the linkage between lock, bolt mechanism, and thumbturn this is what allows the lock or thumbturn to retract the bolt without the other turning. HOWEVER: If the bolt mechanism appears to operate normally with the thumbturn and cylinder removed, the issue is probably one of "timing". In which case you'll have to figure out how to retract it, since you can't replace it until you can open the door. The other (less likely) possibility is that the bolt mechanism is broken. (Uncommon but not unheard-of problem wood shrinks as air humidity decreases, and sometimes things shift enough that a hole bored in midsummer won't quite align well enough in midwinter.) I'm betting you'll see part of the linkage banging into the surrounding wood, and that if you remove a bit of wood there for the linkage to operate it'll solve your problem. Try turning its hub with a screwdriver and watch it move. Looking into the resulting bore through the door, you'll be able to see the deadbolt's mechanism. If you want to try doing something yourself: Dismount the thumbturn and lock cylinder. It's their lock, it's their property, it's their responsibility to fix it (or to authorize you to get it fixed and deduct the cost from your next rent check, or something of that sort). Since you said it's a rental, I'd start by calling the landlord.
